Founded by a team of passionate PhD students from the University of Connecticut, Zemi is driven by a commitment to innovation, research, and impact. We are scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs united by a vision to redefine wearable health and fitness monitoring.

Our Story

Zemi was born out of a desire to address the limitations of existing wearable health technologies. It all started in the summer of 2021 when our founder, John M. Toribio, participated in Accelerate UConn, the NSF I-Corps program at the University of Connecticut. Inspired by the potential of advanced polymer materials and the need for better health monitoring solutions, John began to explore ways to integrate conductive materials directly into wearable garments. The goal was simple: to create a product that was not only technologically advanced but also comfortable, durable, and capable of providing continuous, reliable health data.

During a Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship course in 2022, John met Kyle Mahoney, who shared his passion for bridging the gap between science, technology, and entrepreneurship. Shortly after, Josué Martínez-Martínez joined the team, bringing his expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance the capabilities of our wearable systems. Together, we founded Zemi Labs Inc., dedicated to developing the Zemi Platform—a revolutionary approach to wearable health monitoring.

With over six years of research experience in the chemistry of biopolymers, electroactive materials, and sustainable electronics, he is the driving force behind our innovative approach to our products, that are at the forefront of both science and practicality. John envisions Zemi Labs as a leader in the wearable technology industry, driving forward the next generation of health monitoring devices that are seamlessly integrated into everyday life.
